Day 5 - Deadly Friend (1986)

 Day 5 - Deadly Friend (1986)

PLOT -  Paul is a new kid in town with a robot named "BB". He befriends Samantha and the three of them have a lot of good times together. That is, until Samantha's abusive father throws her down some stairs and kills her. In an effort to save her life, Paul implants BB's computer brain into Samantha's human brain causing Samantha to rise from the dead and begin attacking everyone who wronged her.

LOWDOWN - I reviewed this movie this past winter as one of the most tragic love stories ever told. Instead of doing the typical review, I decided that I'll pin point a few reasons why Deadly Friend is a highly underated film that's sadly only seen for it's flaws. So here it is, 6 reasons why Deadly Friend is a great movie.

REASON 1 - B.B the robot
I was highly impressed with this. Yeah it was 1986, but the fact the crew actualy build this thing still amazes me. I love that it was voiced by Rodger Rabbit himself Mr. Charles Fleischer, and who can forget the awesome scene when BB needs to recharge his batteries and the look the world's greatest climax that comes across his little blue light up eyes. Classic...

REASON 2 - Blue eye shadow
In the novel Deadly Friend, they went to great lengths to explain how Sam was slowly decomposing as time went on. Her body starting to smell, and her entire face turning into a rasin (not a pretty image) Instead of doing what I'm sure could have been an awesome makeup job, they decided not to turn the lovely Kristy Swanson into a walking talking zombie. Instead they just hollowed out her eyes a little bit and as more time went on it honestly seemed that all they did was pale her out a bit and put blue eye shadow around her eyes. In a strange way it seemed to work in my eyes. I sorta understand why they did this, they wanted to keep Sam just as beauitful as she was when she died. Still, seeing her rot slowly would have been awesome. I'm still yet to get a blond wing and be Sam for Halloween one year. I mean, it would be easy...

REASON 3 - Same back-lot neighborhood
Yep, this movie was filmed on the same back-lot that such classics as Fright Night, The Monster Squad, and Gremlins was filmed on. In fact if you look close enough while watching the movie you can spot Charlie's house from Fright Night!

REASON 4 - Based off a very well written novel
I came across this book while tape hunting a few years back. The book was in horrible condition, but I had been wanting to read it for some time now since I heard there were huge differences between the novel and the film. The book is a short read, and kinda depressing but has some great elements. Paul in the book is an over weight younger kid with glasses who's called Piggy. Like I said eariler, Sam rots slowly, her face turning into a prune. Some deaths are also added on and changed, and the ending as well. I think it's a must for any horror fan to read!

REASON 5 - Awesome lost artwork
There have been dozens of artwork for Deadly Friend. Not that long ago I noticed that somebody posted different pieces of artwork that ended up being un-used and scraped. The collection was insane and the one that really took out to be is the artwork on the far left. That seriously is some of the most stunning and breath taking artwork for a poster before. I love how Paul and Sam make the shape of a skull. If I ever find a re-print of this I would buy it in a heartbeat!

REASON 6 - A truly amazing trailer.
I love how this film sorta hypes up the fact that Wes Craven has just finished A Nightmare On Elm Street, andf that Deadly Friend will be his next masterpiece. (Eh, not really, but some one the man has directed some truly awesome movies that don't get the love they deserve 'Shocker, People Under The Stairs, ect.') I love the music cue right at the very end when Sam steps back smiling going "You're so cute!" such an awesome trailer, gives me chills every time.
